making a shield
the experience of flying my equipment last week was pretty scary as there is so many ways things can go wrong.... and I would lose my iphone...
Since I needed to fly it again, I decided I should make a box, which will protect it from falling, and water (due to unpredictable weather conditions)
and this time i will be using an app on the iphone too. Called GPS lite, which can give me information regarding speed, height and location. This time, hopefully i can get better data, since i am prepared to let it go even higher!

Saturday morning
The experiment that I wanted to pursue presents more and more challenge. The site manager whom I called this morning would not let me fly anything near the site and he also said that I could not enter the building to do my survey...
Since I already got the equipments.... I thought I'll just fly it at the park opposite the site and what I discovered was quite scary and surprising!
From the footage below, I will show you exactly what happened:
My Iphone lifted straight up in both trials but when it reach a certain height, it suddenly moves dramatically towards railway line. VERY SCARY. Because when I tried to retrieve it, there was a pretty strong resistance and I was afraid that my line would cut the laces (or even cause some balloons to wonder off and let my iphone drop <-- across the rail tracks, or worse, on the rail tracks...) so I had to slowly pull it back, and carefully to avoid putting too much tension on the line.
In the second video, my line got stuck (for a few seconds) in the trees, while my iphone is still quite far away from me, but luckily I was able to get my iphone back!
What I discovered in this exercise is the existence and magnitude of micro-climate in our urban space. Wind was actually blowing the opposite direction at the site (as I experienced) to where my balloons are wondering off! and it is quite strong!
This phenomenon is already giving ideas about how to change my first matrix (as it seems it is quite hard to achieve what I previously thought was manageable to do). There simply is too much unforeseen dangers and laws which will not allow me to do such experiments.
Overall it was a very pleasant experience as many people quoted that I have made a good start for a Saturday for them, and took photos with me, the balloons and had a chat with me about my project. It is a good way to engage with the community and kind of communicate to them that we are not just stubborn people who just draw and stuff, but are actively involved in the community and our design are heavily based on observation and experiment on the real world.

Measuring carbon monoxide level
Testing hot air balloon
One of my experiments involve using hot air balloon carry the sensors to automatically collect air quality data on the site. using the drone was unfeasible as there is a range limit. However, testing with hot air balloon seems dangerous as you need quite a big plastic bag to fly it, and it requires quite a big fire power to fill the bag with hot air rapidly... Not to mention the windy condition of the site.
it turns out my plastic bag melted before it could get enough lift to go up...
An alternative would be to use helium balloons, this way, I can have more control and would be safer to do on site.
AR Drone flying session
Alcohol Gas Sensor MQ-3
Upon the arrival of my tools from the US, I started testing with the alcohol meter, which measures the amount of alcohol present in the air. It works!! successfully responds to the varying degree of alcohol I deliver to it through my mouth! giving to peaks (in Grasshopper) whenever I breath into it. This is just a testing stage for installing the CO meter onto it (because it is much more expensive), and theoretically it should work like the alcohol meter!
This would be greatly beneficial towards automatically measuring air quality around the site.

A dialogue
This is a hypothetical facade with fin like elements that responds to real time data. Right now they are the result of little electronic interference with Ap1 on the Arduino UNO. They can probably respond to any other real time variables.
I wanted to post a video to show it but Fraps isnt working very well.
